Statement
of The Jamaica Association of Evangelicals
Knutsford Court Hotel
February 7, 2008
- The Jamaica
Association of Evangelicals (JAE) believes very firmly that all life
is a gift from God. We affirm our position that the moral issue of Abortion
is more than a question of the freedom of a woman to control the reproductive
functions of her body.
- We believe that
all life is a gift from God, so that neither the life of an unborn child,
nor that of the mother may be lightly taken.
- We express our
disappointment on the Abortion Bill tabled in parliament recently that
continues to ignore the realization that life in the womb starts long
before viability (Psalm 139:13-14; Jeremiah 1:5). Abortion-on-demand
or for reasons for personal convenience, social adjustments, or economic
advantage, are morally wrong. Therefore, the JAE will fight this present
abortion bill from Negril Point to Morant Point.
- Both the testimony
of the Bible, and the history of evangelical thought, unite to condemn
abortion-on-demand.
Principles
from the Bible
- By identifying
living persons with their fetus (i.e. the unborn child). Psalms 51:5;
Psalm 139:13-16; Luke 1:41:44). The unborn child is a human with supreme
rights to full personhood.
- By using the Hebrew
words for “infant” and “adult,” God identifies
the fetus as a “child” in Exodus 21:22; 1 Kings 3:17; Ecclesiastes
11:15. God looks upon the unborn as his children whom he loves - unlike
the butchers of the abortion industry, who victimize vulnerable women
and look upon these beautiful children as mere “blobs of the tissue”
who serve only one purpose - to be killed for a profit.
- The Bible places
a strong emphasis upon concepts like: continuity of the race, children
being a blessing from God, and, the taking of personal responsibility
in sexual affairs. All of this seems contrary to the contemporary “quick-fix”
abortion-on-demand sub-culture.
- We find high regard
for life among the Jews of the Old Testament and Jesus’ day. Throughout
the whole of Jewish literature (such as the Talmud) right up until 500
AD, there is only one record of an abortion being performed and that
was in order to save the mother’s life. The Jews of Jesus’
time always understood abortion to be wrong, for example, Josephus,
a famous Pharisee historian and thinker of that time, said, “The
law forbids women either to cause or to make away with the fetus; a
woman convicted of this is regarded as having committed infanticide.”
- In Exodus 21:
22-23 and Job 10:8ff the Bible teaches “the quality of life.”
- In Lev 19:4, Deut
27: 18, Psalm 82:3-4; and Matt 25:40--the Bible teaches special care
for the weak, thus protecting the rights of the unborn.
The JAE believes that
All Reality Hinges on Moral Foundations. We believe that moral laws are
as abiding as the physical laws. Just as “it is always wrong to
hate” we believe that abortion on demand is always wrong. It is
wrong in 2008 and will still be wrong in the year 3000.
